Can you survive mesothelioma – Improving survivability when affected by a disease is one of the common ways to fight the
Factors that affect survivability
Mesothelioma has several stages and each stage has its own survivability rate. Stage 1 mesothelioma is indicated by a small tumor in the affected organ, commonly around the pleural membrane. Generally, patients with stage 1 mesothelioma have a better survival rate varied from 15 to 3 years after diagnosis.

But commonly, there are fewer people who do health examinations and detect the disease so his/her mesothelioma has reached a later stage. Stage 4 mesothelioma may limit the affected lifespan for 12 months or less.
Mesothelioma also has several types that can significantly impact how the doctor will treat the disease and the survivability rate. Mentioned earlier, the most common mesothelioma affects the pleural membrane in the lungs with a low survivability rate. In the first year, the survivability rate can reach around 73% but when it reaches the third year after diagnosis, the survivability rate could decrease to 23%.
The peritoneal mesothelioma has the highest survivability rate with 92% during the first year after diagnosis. The least survivability rate is pericardial mesothelioma with 51% but this mesothelioma is the rarest among the others.
As for the cell types, it can also affect the survivability rate. Epithelioid mesothelioma has the highest rate to be treated and most patients affected by this have the longest survival with the average time around 54 months.
Sarcomatoid mesothelioma is probably the rarest, most difficult to treat, and it is known to be the most aggressive among the others. The mean survival time of this disease is around 5 months. Another type is biphasic mesothelioma, which is the combination of both cells. The survival time is depending on which cell is more dominant.
Having the best treatment according to the type of mesothelioma will extend the survivability rate significantly. The treatment given to peritoneal mesothelioma patients is a cytoreductive surgery mixed with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy or HIPEC, a heated chemotrophic wash. The survivability rate can reach around 67% and survive for 5 years or more beyond the diagnosis.

For pleural mesothelioma sufferer, the survivability rate could increase by about 20% depending on how rare is mesothelioma, especially the additional factor. Doing several clinical trials will improve the survivability with new treatments if any of the conventional methods are not working. Can you survive mesothelioma? The answer is yes as long as the treatment method is clear and proper.
